Tacoma's Urban Design Project Review Process to Begin January 1, 2025

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma will introduce an Urban Design Project Review (UDPR) process on January 1, 2025, requiring larger development projects in designated Mixed-Use Centers to secure approval before obtaining building permits. The UDPR will offer two review tracks: Administrative Review and Urban Design Board Review, each including Concept Design and Final Design stages. Smaller projects may voluntarily opt into this process to request exceptions from specific design standards, such as building height and setbacks. Each project will be assessed against seven Urban Design Objectives to ensure alignment with community values and aesthetic goals. Public engagement is a key component of the UDPR, providing opportunities for community input at various review stages.

This new process complements existing construction and environmental reviews, reflecting a comprehensive approach to urban development that prioritizes thoughtful and inclusive design practices.
