Randy Collins' life took a dramatic turn following an ATV accident that left him with severe disabilities, including impaired vision and memory issues. Now 50, he shares his journey of recovery and fulfillment through volunteering at MultiCare's Good Samaritan Regional Rehabilitation Center, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2024. The center serves approximately 600 patients each year, offering both psychological and physical rehabilitation to individuals recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, and other medical challenges. With an average stay of 17 days, patients receive intense therapy aimed at maximizing their remaining strengths and fostering independence. Director Jacob Woolman emphasizes the need for larger rehab programs amidst the closure of smaller facilities, highlighting the financial pressures imposed by insurance companies.
Collins' experience underscores the center's mission to empower patients, providing both hope and practical support. As Collins states, his work at the center proves that even in the face of adversity, one can find meaning and joy through helping others.
