Nurses at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, represented by the Washington State Nurses Association, have ratified a new contract with an impressive 93. 6% approval rate from voting members. The agreement, reached after extensive negotiations, includes a significant wage increase that raises the base salary from $42. 50 to $46.

02, translating to a 31. 41% pay boost over the contract's lifespan. Additionally, the contract recognizes Juneteenth as a formal holiday and implements measures to protect nurses from workplace violence, such as weapon detectors and secured units. The negotiations involved fourteen bargaining sessions and the threat of a strike, highlighting the nurses' determination to advocate for their rights. International nurses will also benefit, as the contract allows them full credit for their years of experience.

Pamela Devi Chandran from the WSNA emphasized the importance of this agreement for the nursing staff, while Toby Sutton, chief human resources officer at St. Joseph Medical Center, praised the collaborative effort that led to this fair contract. This agreement marks a significant milestone in improving working conditions and compensation for nurses in Pierce County.
