TPD Grateful for Community at Turkey Giveaways

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma Police Department (TPD) successfully organized turkey giveaways this year, distributing over 1,600 free turkeys to local families in partnership with the Tacoma Ministerial Alliance and various businesses. This initiative aimed to enhance the Thanksgiving experience for those in need and was made possible through the dedicated efforts of community volunteers. Chief Avery Moore has played a key role in building public trust since his appointment in 2021, navigating criticism while focusing on positive community impact. TPD Community Engagement Senior Manager Bervin Smith noted the significant turnout, with many residents waiting for hours to receive their meals. This year marked a shift in leadership style, as Smith empowered community members to take charge of the giveaways, fostering a sense of ownership among volunteers.

The participation of the Washington State Patrol and local organizations further strengthened the event’s outreach. Volunteers shared positive experiences, reflecting noticeable improvements in police-community relations. With plans already underway for next year's event, TPD aims to continue nurturing community bonds and support.
