Longview Police sued for killing woman in mental health crisis

Tacoma, WALocal News

A federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed against the Longview Police Department following the tragic shooting of Katelyn Rose Smith during a mental health crisis. Attorneys Mark Lindquist and Angus Lee allege that police officers mishandled the situation by opting for deadly force rather than utilizing available less-lethal options. On New Year's Day 2024, Smith's partner reported her suicidal behavior and the presence of firearms in their home. Upon arrival, officers ordered him to release her, escalating the situation. Smith then came out of the house with an unloaded gun, prompting officers to fire 23 rounds, which resulted in her death.

The lawsuit claims that the officers' actions created a dangerous situation and highlights the urgent need for enhanced training for police in managing mental health crises. Lindquist emphasized that this tragedy was preventable and called for accountability in police conduct, citing the lack of specialized training as a central issue. The lawsuit seeks justice for Smith's death and systemic changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
