Chef Brings New Opportunity to Rescue Mission

Tacoma, WALocal News

Chef Derek Bray, a James Beard Award nominee, is embarking on a significant journey to develop a professional culinary arts training program at the Tacoma Rescue Mission. This initiative is part of the Mission's broader goal of helping individuals escape poverty through comprehensive support services. Bray, who previously owned The Table on 6th Avenue, aims to create a curriculum that provides essential culinary skills while integrating catering operations for practical experience. Inspired by the FareStart model in Seattle, he intends to tailor the program to address the unique challenges faced by those overcoming homelessness and addiction. Bray's focus extends beyond skill acquisition to ensuring participants receive the necessary support for personal and professional stability.

His commitment to community building aligns with the Mission's philosophy of fostering a nurturing environment for its clientele. By re-engaging with the Mission after 15 years, Bray hopes to leverage his culinary expertise to create lasting pathways to success. This innovative program has the potential to transform lives and positively impact the local community.
