Results of GRIT income program released
The GRIT program, which provided $500 monthly to 110 asset-limited, income-constrained, and employed families in Tacoma, has released findings highlighting its significant positive impact on financial health, employment, and food security. Participants reported notable improvements in handling unexpected expenses and increased savings compared to a control group. Employment stability among GRIT recipients was 63%, surpassing the 52% rate in the control group, while food insecurity levels remained lower despite rising costs during the study period. Mayor Victoria Woodards emphasized the importance of these results, asserting that they demonstrate the effectiveness of direct cash investments in addressing poverty. A participant echoed this sentiment, illustrating the struggles many face despite having education and skills.
The successful pilot has led to the expansion of GRIT into GRIT 2. 0, aimed at supporting low-income single heads of households with children. This initiative is part of a broader movement led by Mayors for Guaranteed Income, which seeks to provide financial assistance to families excluded from traditional safety nets. Overall, the GRIT program underscores the potential for guaranteed income initiatives to transform lives and improve community resilience.
