Tacoma voters to decide on permanent tax measure for streets | Tacoma News Tribune
In April 2024, Tacoma voters will make a significant decision regarding 'Streets Initiative II,' which aims to create a permanent funding source for street improvements in the city. This initiative proposes a 2% increase in utility-earnings taxes and a 25-cent increase in property taxes per $1,000 of assessed value. If passed, Tacoma households could expect a monthly increase of approximately $2. 13 in utility taxes and $6 in property taxes. City officials, including Public Works Director Ramiro Chavez, highlight the initiative's critical role in maintaining and enhancing the safety and accessibility of Tacoma's transportation infrastructure.
The previous streets initiative, approved in 2015, raised nearly $400 million but is set to expire soon, leaving some issues unresolved, particularly concerning arterial roads. A community survey indicated that only 24% of residents were satisfied with the condition of these main streets, underscoring the need for ongoing investment. The new initiative aims to address these concerns while prioritizing projects in underserved neighborhoods, with expected revenues of around $25 million in its first year, reflecting Tacoma's commitment to improving local infrastructure for all residents.
