Puget Sound Pet Food Bank to close Tacoma location this month | Tacoma News Tribune

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Puget Sound Pet Food Bank, a vital resource for pet owners in Tacoma for nearly 13 years, will close its Tacoma location on December 28 due to a troubling mismatch between rising demand for pet food and dwindling donations. Currently, the food bank serves about 270 families and supports over 800 pets each month, a record high for the organization. Founded by Marge Meyer, the nonprofit has been crucial in assisting vulnerable groups, including seniors and homeless individuals, who view their pets as family. DeeDee Howe, the current president, highlighted the emotional toll of having to turn away families in need. The nonprofit is actively searching for a larger, more affordable space to continue its mission, potentially relocating to Lakewood.

In the meantime, the Spanaway location will remain open, providing some relief to the community. Donations are still being accepted in person and online to help bridge the gap until a new location is secured. This situation reflects a broader trend affecting pet food banks and shelters across the region, where demand continues to climb amidst rising living costs.
