Tacoma Fire will get $2.5M in more funding, but city budget reveals difficulties ahead

The Tacoma City Council has recently approved a $635 million general fund budget for the 2025-26 biennium, which includes a crucial $2. 5 million funding increase for the Fire Department. This financial boost aims to maintain staffing levels and prevent cuts to fire coverage, which could result in 'brownouts. ' Council Member Joe Bushnell highlighted that the budget prioritizes community safety, though it did not meet the Fire Department's full request for $4. 2 million to retain temporary roving positions essential for addressing staffing shortages.

Union leader Allyson Hinzman stated that while the funding helps, the department remains in a 'critical state,' indicating ongoing challenges. In addition to the funding for the Fire Department, the council anticipates layoffs of approximately 26 city employees as part of budget balancing efforts. Mayor Victoria Woodards expressed concerns about the impact of budget cuts on city services, noting that these decisions are necessary in light of financial realities shared by other municipalities. The budget reflects a proactive approach to addressing a $24 million shortfall and includes dedicated funding for public safety and community services. Looking ahead, the city faces a projected $15 million deficit in the next budget cycle, prompting discussions about further program and personnel cuts.
