Pierce County’s plan to tackle homelessness in 2025 includes $30M in spending, plans show
The Pierce County Human Services Department is actively developing a comprehensive strategy to address homelessness in 2025, with a particular emphasis on youth homelessness. They plan to contract over $30 million in services, including an estimated $3 million to $6 million for eviction prevention programs. This initiative arises amid concerns regarding potential state funding cuts, underscoring the fragile nature of homelessness support in the region. In 2024, the department distributed $6. 6 million to assist with rent and utility debts, highlighting the high demand for such services.
A recent consultant review indicated the need for improved structure and transparency within the CoC, which could impact future federal funding from HUD. Additionally, the department intends to hire a third-party consultant to refine the prioritization tool used in their Coordinated Entry system to address identified disparities. They are also looking to create a dedicated Coordinated Entry process specifically for youth facing homelessness, demonstrating a strong commitment to ending homelessness and supporting vulnerable populations in Pierce County.
