Man arrested after attempting to steal ATM in Pierce County

A 57-year-old man was arrested in Gig Harbor on Friday morning while attempting to steal an ATM machine, resulting in damages estimated at around $60,000. The incident began when the Gig Harbor Police Department received a tip from a video-security company about two suspects using a truck to steal the ATM from a bank. Officers arrived to find the men trying to attach a chain to the machine. When confronted, the suspects fled on foot, prompting a coordinated response from law enforcement, including a K9 unit. The dog successfully tracked the suspect across state Route 16, leading police to bushes where he was apprehended.

The second suspect remains at large, and additional charges may be filed once the origin of the truck is confirmed. This event highlights ongoing crime issues in the area and raises concerns about community safety.
