Puget Sound Pet Food Bank to close Tacoma location this month | Tacoma News Tribune
The Puget Sound Pet Food Bank, a nonprofit serving Tacoma for nearly 13 years, will close its Tacoma location on December 28 due to a significant drop in donations despite a record increase in demand for pet food and supplies. Each month, the food bank has assisted around 270 families and over 800 pets, highlighting its critical role in the community. Founded by Marge Meyer, the organization provides a range of items, including dry and wet food for dogs and cats, toys, collars, leashes, and supplies for small pets. DeeDee Howe, the current leader, expressed deep concern for vulnerable populations who depend on their services, emphasizing that pets are often seen as family members. Although the Spanaway location will continue operations, the closure of the Tacoma site is a painful decision driven by rising pet food costs and ongoing community struggles.
Howe noted that she has been personally financing the food bank, which has become increasingly unsustainable. The food bank is actively seeking a new, more affordable location in Tacoma to continue its mission, as the need for accessible pet food resources remains urgent with local shelters and rescues at capacity.
