In Gig Harbor, a 57-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning after he and an accomplice attempted to steal an ATM machine from a bank. The Gig Harbor Police Department received a report from a video-security company that alerted them to the ongoing theft. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the men attaching a chain to the ATM, which was connected to a truck believed to be stolen. Upon the officers' arrival, both suspects fled the scene, prompting a response that included officers from multiple jurisdictions and a K9 unit. The police dog tracked the man to some bushes, resulting in his capture.

He was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of attempted theft and malicious mischief, with potential for additional charges pending the investigation of the truck's origin. The second suspect remains missing, and the total damage to the ATM and the bank’s building is estimated at $60,000. This incident highlights ongoing issues with ATM theft in the region, underscoring the need for improved security measures.
