Two lanes closed on westbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge Dec. 14-15 | Tacoma News Tribune

Tacoma, WALocal News

Drivers planning to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge this weekend should prepare for significant delays due to ongoing repairs on the westbound span. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that starting at 8 a. m. on Saturday, December 14, two right lanes will be closed until 9 p. m.

on Sunday, December 15, along with the closure of the Jackson Avenue on-ramp to westbound state Route 16. The repairs focus on an expansion joint in the bridge's surface, distinct from the joint repaired in May after a routine inspection revealed damage. Given the bridge's 74-year history, it has faced numerous maintenance challenges, including rust and corrosion, leading to multiple repair efforts throughout the year. Travelers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and exercise caution in work zones. WSDOT emphasizes that the HOV lane will remain open to all drivers during this period.

Real-time updates are available via their app, and residents are encouraged to sign up for email notifications about road work in Pierce County. This repair work highlights the ongoing maintenance needs of aging infrastructure and the importance of public awareness during such projects.
