On December 5, 2024, the West Coast experienced a significant seismic event when a 7. 0-magnitude earthquake struck near Eureka, California. Initially reported at 7. 3, the quake was downgraded by the U. S.

Geological Service, which noted its epicenter was roughly 45 miles southwest of Eureka. Following the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued from Santa Cruz, California, to Florence, Oregon. Although no destructive tsunami occurred, NOAA canceled the warnings by 11:54 a. m. and urged residents to stay clear of hazard zones until authorities declared it safe.

Reports indicate that tremors were felt widely, including locations as distant as Reno, Nevada. This event underscores California's ongoing vulnerability to seismic activity and the critical need for preparedness among coastal communities, serving as a reminder of the potential for natural disasters in the region.
