The Tacoma Dome Link Extension, anticipated for completion in 2035, represents a significant investment in public transportation infrastructure, connecting Federal Way to Tacoma with nearly 10 miles of light rail. Sound Transit has unveiled a draft environmental impact statement outlining proposed routes and station locations, including a preferred route with elevated stations and bridge crossings over the Puyallup River. A key station near Freighthouse Square may lead to the displacement of local businesses. A public comment period will begin on December 13, allowing community members to engage in discussions about the project's impact. The Sound Transit Board is expected to finalize decisions regarding the route and station placements in 2026, after reviewing public feedback.

The project has faced scrutiny over its potential effects on culturally sensitive areas and local businesses. With an estimated daily ridership of 24,000 to 36,000, the extension aims to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainable transportation options, contributing to a long-term vision for improved regional connectivity.
