Tacoma, WALocal News

On December 5, 2024, West Pierce Fire & Rescue conducted a controlled burn at the site of the former Key Antiques building, transforming the vacant property into a training ground for firefighters. This exercise aimed to simulate real-life scenarios, thereby improving essential skills and teamwork among firefighters. The building, located at 11138 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, has been unoccupied for four years and is slated for redevelopment into two new apartment buildings totaling 45 units. Local residents were advised to be cautious of increased traffic and smoke during the burn. Former owner David Colegrove shared his sentiments about the building, reminiscing about the friendships and memories formed during his 25 years of operation.

This event not only serves a training purpose but also underscores the ongoing development efforts in Lakewood to address housing needs. The dual focus on public safety and urban development reflects a proactive approach within the community, marking a significant transition for the site and aligning with broader trends in local development.
