Tacoma expects layoffs due to dire financial situation | Tacoma News Tribune

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma is confronting a significant budget crisis, leading to plans for the elimination of approximately 26 positions to achieve $5. 6 million in savings. This decision follows a City Council vote addressing a $24 million shortfall, with an additional $4. 7 million in cuts still needed. The narrow approval of the budget amendment has raised alarms among council members and firefighters about potential impacts on public safety and essential services.

The fire department, despite a budget increase, warns that cutting a temporary program to manage overtime could lead to even higher future costs. Council members have expressed disappointment over the implications of these staffing reductions amid rising demands for city services. Layoff notifications are expected to start in January, and discussions about further personnel cuts are anticipated. Council member Joe Bushnell described the financial outlook as 'really dire,' indicating the city may face tough decisions regarding its workforce.
