Ruston City Council Enacts Controversial Midnight Liquor Sales Ban

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Ruston City Council's decision to ban liquor sales after midnight has sparked a heated debate about its impact on local businesses and public safety. Following complaints regarding public intoxication and disruptive behavior, council members felt the need to act. However, the ordinance faced strong opposition at a recent public hearing, with many local business owners arguing it wouldn't effectively address the problems and would harm their operations. Critics labeled the ban 'over-reaching' and suggested that enforcement should fall to state liquor authorities and local police. While council members acknowledged these concerns, they expressed hope that the measure would foster greater accountability among businesses and patrons.

The ordinance, effective five days after publication, mandates that all establishments in Ruston cease liquor sales from 12 a. m. to 6 a. m. It is set to expire in November 2025 unless extended or amended.

Critics are already considering a ballot initiative to contest the ordinance, highlighting the need for substantial evidence to support such measures.
