Tacoma, WALocal News

On December 5, 2024, West Pierce Fire & Rescue conducted a controlled burn at the site of the former Key Antiques in Lakewood, serving both training and site preparation for new residential developments. This training exercise, held at 11138 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, provided firefighters with a realistic environment to enhance their skills. The site is set to be transformed into two apartment buildings totaling 45 units, addressing local housing needs. David Colegrove, the owner of Key Antiques, expressed sorrow over the loss of a building where he spent 25 years, emphasizing the emotional connections formed there. While the public was encouraged to observe, the fire department reminded them to be cautious of traffic disruptions and smoke.

This event underscores the fire department's dedication to training and marks a significant step in the community's transformation, balancing the preservation of history with the need for growth.
