Ruston City Council Passes Controversial Midnight Liquor Sales Ban

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Ruston City Council has passed an ordinance banning liquor sales after midnight, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions within the community. Council members cited resident complaints about noise, public intoxication, and property damage as reasons for the ban, viewing it as a potential solution. However, many business owners argue that the ordinance will not effectively address these issues and could jeopardize their livelihoods. During a public hearing, 14 speakers expressed concerns about the ordinance's impact and called for better enforcement from existing authorities rather than blanket restrictions. The council's vote was close, with three members in favor and two against, while the mayor abstained.

The ordinance will be in effect until November 2025 unless renewed, aiming to foster community engagement on public safety. Council member John Holland emphasized the need for the ordinance due to perceived inaction from business owners regarding self-regulation, reflecting broader debates about balancing public safety with local economic interests.
