Ready for school on day one

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma's Kids Health and Safety Fair will take place on August 23, providing vital back-to-school resources for families. The event, led by Tacoma Police's Bervin Smith, will give away 60 free bicycles to children, courtesy of Bikes for Kids, which has distributed over 15,000 bikes since its inception in 2000. Tony Chursky, the program's operations manager, highlighted the community's role, with recent donations including nearly 100 bikes from the Purdy Transfer and Recycle Center. In addition to bicycles, the fair will offer haircuts, dental cleanings, hygiene bags, and backpacks filled with school supplies. Local Boy Scouts will assist with helmet fittings for the bicycles.

Last year’s fair attracted over 4,000 attendees, with expectations for even greater participation this year. The event aims to ensure children leave better equipped for school. Title sponsors include Coordinated Care and Toy Rescue Mission, enhancing the fair's community impact.
