City warns of phone scam
The City of Puyallup has issued a warning regarding a phone scam affecting cell phone users in Pierce County. Fraudulent text messages threaten recipients with license suspension or additional fees for non-payment, despite the Pierce County District Court not sending such communications. Residents are advised to ignore these messages and refrain from providing personal or financial information. In addition, officials emphasize that court-related matters are handled through official mail, not via phone or text. The rise in jury scam calls and texts in Washington state has prompted heightened vigilance among authorities.
Scammers often use personal information to appear legitimate, creating urgency to pressure victims into hasty payments. Those receiving suspicious calls are encouraged to contact the Pierce County Sheriff's Department or the District Court for verification. For concerns regarding court-related payments, residents can contact the District Court directly at (253)-798-7487.
