Helping young voters update their signature
Pierce County Elections noted that voters aged 18 to 26 account for 51% of challenged ballots due to signature discrepancies. The highest rates of challenges are found among 18-year-olds at 9. 4% and 19-year-olds at 7. 9%. In response, the county will mail postcards on June 30 to these young voters, encouraging them to update their signatures via a secure online tool.
Pierce County Auditor Linda Farmer shared her daughter's experience, illustrating how signatures can significantly change in just a few years. Legislative changes, such as the Future Voter Program established in 2019, have facilitated registration for younger voters. Additionally, laws allowing participation in the August Primary if turning 18 by the November General Election have further expanded access. This targeted outreach reflects Pierce County Elections’ commitment to ensuring every eligible vote counts. By inviting young voters to update their signatures, the county aims to minimize the number of ballots flagged or rejected for mismatched signatures in future elections.
