Making a difference in the lives of seniors
Lutheran Community Services Northwest (LCSNW) addresses the challenges faced by Alzheimer's caregivers through its Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). This initiative encourages volunteers aged 55 and older to provide vital community support, including companionship to individuals living with dementia. Since 1984, RSVP has amassed over 1. 26 million volunteer hours, with 84% of participants reporting improved health after a year of service. The program offers various ways to volunteer, such as making phone calls through Senior Friends or participating in the Santa for Seniors initiative, which delivers gifts to homebound seniors.
Rena Marken, the RSVP Program Supervisor, highlights the importance of leveraging the skills and experiences of seniors for community service. Engaging in these activities not only benefits clients but also alleviates feelings of loneliness for volunteers. The program also addresses critical needs by checking on isolated seniors who may face emergencies. Overall, RSVP fosters meaningful connections and enhances the lives of both volunteers and those they serve.
