South End comes alive with annual block party
The South End Neighborhood Council (SENCo) hosted its third annual block party on June 28 in Spring Hill, Tacoma, moving from its previous venue to encourage broader community engagement. SENCo vice chair Rachel Wilkie explained the decision to rotate locations, aiming to celebrate new projects, with next year's event likely at Fern Hill. A new mural at the Fern Hill Library will involve community input, showcasing titles of favorite books submitted by residents. During the block party, attendees participated in adding their hopes and wishes to a mural by tying fabric strips to its branches, inspired by the book "Wishtree. " Local vendors educated attendees about homeownership opportunities, highlighting that many clients can enter homes with as little as $600 out of pocket.
This emphasis on community-driven projects and financial education underscores the importance of local initiatives in fostering connection and empowerment. The event not only showcased artistic endeavors but also served as a platform for residents to express their aspirations. Such community engagement is vital for building generational wealth and enhancing neighborhood ties.
