Local Yakima resident turns weight loss journey into artistic scavenger hunt for community

Sunnyside, WALocal News

In Yakima, Stephen Rice turned his weight loss journey into an artistic community project by painting "kindness stones" hidden around the Yakima Area Arboretum. Initially seeking to lose weight through daily walks, Rice quickly sought to enhance his motivation by creating a collection of 50 painted stones, each telling a unique story or poem. He utilized Google Earth to track the stones' locations, enhancing community engagement as people discovered and picked up the stones. Rice noted that every stone he placed was collected, demonstrating significant community participation and enthusiasm. One notable stone, a Purple Octopus, was relocated to a more fitting environment, symbolizing the project's impact on both the creator and the recipients.

This initiative not only fostered creativity but also helped Rice achieve his weight loss goal of 59 pounds. The project illustrates the power of art and community connection in promoting wellness and kindness. Rice's endeavor highlights the intersection of personal goals and community engagement, inspiring others to find joy in creativity.
