Reclamation announces Yakima basin July water supply forecast

Sunnyside, WALocal News

The Bureau of Reclamation revealed that the Yakima basin's water supply for the 2025 irrigation season will not meet demand, with junior water rights holders receiving only 45% of their entitlements. Senior rights holders will receive their full allocations, but overall water availability remains a concern. On July 1, reservoir storage stood at 60% of capacity, with snowpack levels at a drastic 0% of average. June's precipitation was recorded at just 26% of normal levels, further straining water resources. Monthly updates will be provided to reflect changing conditions, incorporating data on precipitation and river flows.

This forecast underscores the challenges faced by over half of the water rights holders in the basin, who are primarily junior rights holders. The Bureau manages water to fulfill rights and contracts while balancing instream flow obligations. The situation highlights the need for careful water management amid ongoing climate uncertainties.
