City of Spokane Considers Rejoining County Aquifer Protection Area
The City of Spokane is moving forward with a proposal to rejoin the Spokane County Aquifer Protection Area (APA), a critical step recommended by the Climate Resiliency and Sustainability Board. This measure, which will be presented to voters, seeks to address growing concerns over the safety of the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, which serves over 500,000 residents. After not participating in the APA since 2004, the city aims to implement a $15 annual fee for single-family homes, projected to raise approximately $1. 8 million each year. Mayor Lisa Brown stresses the importance of this initiative in the face of threats such as PFAS contamination and climate change.
Council President Betsy Wilkerson emphasizes the commitment to responsible environmental stewardship through the rejoining of the APA. The generated funds will facilitate various protective measures, including stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and public education initiatives. The APA has been a vital resource for over 40 years, supporting the health of the community's drinking water supply. This renewed effort highlights Spokane's proactive approach to safeguarding its water resources for future generations.
