New Automated Traffic Safety Cameras Installed at Intersection of Mission and Greene

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane will implement photo red traffic safety cameras at the intersection of E Mission Ave and N Greene St to combat rising traffic incidents. The Spokane Police Department chose this location due to 18 crashes reported since 2023, marking it as one of the city's most hazardous intersections. A 30-day grace period begins on November 24, allowing drivers to receive warnings before fines are imposed. After this period, running a red light will result in a $145 infraction. Director of Transportation and Sustainability Jon Snyder highlighted the alarming increase in collisions, stressing that each injury or fatality is one too many.

Spokane Police Lieutenant Benjamin Maplethorpe noted that previous installations of red light cameras have successfully reduced collisions and speeding. Additional traffic safety cameras will also be deployed near Shadle Park High School, Shaw Middle School, and at the intersection of N Division St and E Magnesium Rd. This initiative aims to foster safer driving conditions across Spokane.
