Suspect Identified in Unsolved Murder of Margaret Anselmo

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Police have identified Brian J. Anderson as the suspect in the 1997 murder of Margaret Anselmo, employing Forensic Genetic Genealogy techniques that have revolutionized cold case investigations. Anselmo was discovered dead on January 3, 1997, in an alley, suffering from severe head trauma and signs of sexual assault, which the Spokane County Medical Examiner classified as homicide. Despite extensive investigative efforts, no suspect was linked to her murder for decades until recent advancements in forensic technology. The police sent preserved evidence to a Texas-based firm, Othram, which developed a genetic profile leading to Anderson.

Local genealogist Lynda Keenan helped identify Anderson's relatives, who provided DNA that confirmed his identity as the suspect. Family members of Anderson expressed concern for Anselmo's surviving relatives and a desire to assist in the investigation. If he were alive today, Anderson would face serious charges of 1st Degree Murder and 1st Degree Rape. Authorities continue to seek additional information from the public regarding this case.
