Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance
Spokane City Council members will present the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance at the Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting on Monday. The ordinance enables Spokane Police Department officers to exercise discretion in enforcing laws against unauthorized camping and obstruction while providing services to those willing to accept help. It targets illegal camping on public property and outlines increasing consequences for repeat offenders. Council Member Zack Zappone emphasized the need for a balanced approach to support vulnerable populations while enforcing laws. Council Member Michael Cathcart noted the importance of accountability and safety for the community.
The ordinance also addresses environmental concerns, including the protection of waterways and public trees, and tackles issues like illegal fires and litter. Council members anticipate discussing the ordinance in detail and establishing a legislative timeline. Members of the public can view the ordinance and register to testify at the committee meeting.
