Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance
The Spokane City Council is set to unveil the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance at the upcoming Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting on Monday. This legislation will allow Spokane Police Department officers to offer services to individuals willing to accept assistance and cite those who repeatedly obstruct public spaces or camp illegally. The ordinance aims to clarify enforcement discretion for officers, addressing issues that arose from a previous ordinance passed in June. Council Member Zack Zappone stated that the goal is to help vulnerable populations while maintaining law enforcement against those who refuse assistance. Council Member Michael Cathcart noted the importance of accountability and ensuring community safety standards.
The ordinance also includes measures to protect local waterways and public trees while preventing illegal fires and litter. The council anticipates discussing the ordinance and setting a timeline for legislative action during the meeting. Community members can view the ordinance and sign up to testify via a provided link.
