Spokane City Council Hosts A Community Food Drive
Spokane City Council and City Employees will organize a community food drive from October 15 to December 15 to support the Zilch and Bite2Go programs. Zilch focuses on immediate food distribution through local pantries, while Bite2Go provides essential weekend meals for K-12 students in Spokane. Council Member Paul Dillon expressed gratitude for addressing food insecurity, linking it to community health and student retention. Bite2Go reports that one in five children in the area faces hunger, which hinders their academic performance. Residents can contribute non-perishable food items at designated drop boxes in City Hall or make monetary donations via a QR code linked to 2nd Harvest.
Council Member Michael Cathcart encouraged community engagement, suggesting that even utility bill payments at City Hall could incorporate donations. The initiative aims to ensure that no child in Spokane goes hungry, reinforcing the community's commitment to combating food insecurity. For more information on how to support, residents can visit the 2nd Harvest website.
