Council Members to Introduce New Camping and Obstruction Ordinance
The Spokane City Council plans to introduce the “Safe and Accessible Spaces” ordinance during Monday's Public Safety and Community Health Committee meeting. This legislation provides police with the authority to offer services to individuals willing to accept help or cite those who repeatedly violate camping and obstruction laws. Council Member Zack Zappone noted the importance of balancing support for vulnerable populations with law enforcement. Council Member Michael Cathcart highlighted the collaborative efforts to enhance community safety and accountability. The ordinance also aims to protect public resources, including waterways and trees, and addresses issues related to illegal fires and litter.
The Council's focus on enforcement discretion seeks to resolve ambiguities from a prior ordinance passed in June. The timeline for legislative action will be established during the meeting. Members of the public can access the ordinance and register to testify at the committee meeting.
