Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department co-hosted a weeklong Dialogue Policing training event aimed at improving communication between law enforcement and community members. This comprehensive, evidence-based program, developed by the Columbus Police Department, provided a 40-hour course with participation from various agencies in the Spokane area. Officers learned about the Dialogue Policing model, focusing on de-escalation techniques and crowd psychology, while also engaging with local activists and media during Q&A sessions. Training scenarios allowed participants to practice their new skills before completing certification requirements, enhancing their ability to manage large-scale gatherings. This initiative reflects a growing commitment to fostering trust and collaboration between police and the communities they serve, particularly in light of ongoing discussions about police-community relations.
The training underscores the importance of effective communication in maintaining public safety. As community expectations evolve, programs like this are crucial in promoting understanding and cooperation. Local activists expressed optimism that such training could lead to improved interactions with law enforcement.
