Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training

The Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University held a weeklong Dialogue Policing training event from October 6 to October 15, 2025, designed to improve communication between law enforcement and the community during large gatherings. Developed by the Columbus Police Department, the program offers a 40-hour, evidence-based course focusing on communication, de-escalation techniques, and crowd psychology. Officers are introduced to the Dialogue Policing model and engage in Q&A sessions with local activists and media members. Practical scenarios help officers apply learned skills in real-world situations before completing their certification. This training reflects an ongoing effort to enhance community relations and address public safety concerns.

The Spokane area saw participation from multiple law enforcement agencies, indicating a collaborative approach to policing. Dialogue Policing emphasizes understanding and collaboration, vital in today’s complex social landscape. The initiative aims to create a safer environment for all during public events.
