Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training
Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department co-hosted a weeklong Dialogue Policing training aimed at equipping law enforcement with essential communication skills. The comprehensive, evidence-based course, developed by the Columbus Police Department, spans 40 hours and focuses on fostering collaboration between officers and community members. Attendees learned from community activists and participated in discussions with members of the media, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives. The curriculum includes de-escalation techniques and insights from crowd psychology to better prepare officers for large gatherings. Officers also engaged in practical training scenarios to enhance their skills before completing certification requirements.
This initiative addresses the growing need for improved community relations and effective policing strategies in Spokane. By emphasizing dialogue and understanding, the training aims to create a safer environment during public events. Such programs are crucial in shaping the future of law enforcement interactions with the community.
