Spokane Police Department and Gonzaga University co-host weeklong Dialogue Policing training

Gonzaga University and the Spokane Police Department co-hosted a weeklong Dialogue Policing training event starting October 6th. This comprehensive, evidence-based program, developed by the Columbus Police Department, equips law enforcement with crucial communication skills for handling large gatherings. Attending officers were introduced to the Dialogue Policing model and participated in a class focused on the perspectives of community activists. The training included a Q&A session with local activists and media, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. Participants also learned de-escalation techniques and science-informed crowd psychology, enhancing their effectiveness in the field.

Officers practiced through training scenarios, ensuring they understood and could apply the material learned. Certification requirements were completed at the end of the weeklong training, demonstrating a commitment to professional development. This initiative highlights Spokane's effort to improve police-community relations and promote safer interactions during public events.
