SPD launches alternative reporting option for sexual assault survivors
The Spokane Police Department (SPD) launched Seek Then Speak, a new reporting option for sexual assault survivors that prioritizes privacy and support. Developed by Ending Violence Against Women International (EVAWI), this resource allows survivors and their support networks to gather vital information about medical and supportive services. Survivors aged 18 and older can complete a self-guided interview at their own pace, which generates a PDF they can either retain or submit to law enforcement. This initiative went live in Washington State, expanding local resources for survivors in Spokane. Seek Then Speak empowers survivors by educating them about their rights and the purpose of the information collected during the interview process.
Importantly, the program is intended for circumstances that do not necessitate immediate law enforcement intervention. SPD encourages those in urgent situations to call 911 or seek immediate medical assistance. The launch of this program represents a significant step in addressing the needs of sexual assault survivors in the community.
