Council Considers Proposal for Donation of New Ice Facility

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Valley City Council will host a public input session on Sept. 30 to discuss a proposed $44 million regional ice facility. The facility will encompass 65,000 square feet and feature dual NHL-sized ice sheets, aimed at enhancing youth sports and stimulating economic development. Innovia Foundation presented the project, backed by a local benefactor, and seeks a long-term ground lease for an 11-acre site. The proposal has garnered support from key stakeholders, including local sports teams and school districts, indicating a strong regional interest.

City staff will outline the estimated costs and community benefits during the session. The project aligns with the city’s 2023 Tourism Strategic Plan, which identifies an ice facility as a top opportunity for tourism. Additionally, the proposal includes an option for the city to purchase the facility for $9. 4 million in the future. The benefactor will fully fund the facility's construction but seeks city assistance for road and utility developments.
