Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff, aligning with Governor Bob Ferguson’s directive to honor victims of political violence. This act of remembrance includes Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were both assassinated on June 14, 2025. Charlie Kirk, another notable victim, was killed on September 10, 2025. The City also honors Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were injured in an assassination attempt.

Brown stated, "Violence has no place in our democracy," emphasizing the need for unity in mourning. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14. The initiative encourages residents to lower flags at their homes and businesses in solidarity. This gesture reflects a broader national response to rising political violence and aims to foster community resilience.
