1914 Golden Spike Marker Placed Monday, September 15
Spokane will honor the 111th anniversary of the Ayer-Cutoff railroad link with a memorial marker ceremony on September 15, 2025. The event, set for 1 p. m. under the Monroe Street Bridge, aims to recognize the impact of this critical transportation development. The marker is funded by a grant from the William G.
Pomeroy Foundation and facilitated by the Jonas Babcock Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Ayer-Cutoff, completed in 1914, significantly shortened travel time to the west coast and connected Spokane to an expansive railroad system. On the same day, Spokane’s Union Station opened, marking a new era in passenger services. Local railroad champion Robert E. Strahorn secured investments that solidified Spokane's role as a key railroad hub in the American West.
The event underscores Spokane's rich transportation history and its ongoing relevance in the region. Community participation reflects a commitment to preserving local heritage and recognizing historical achievements.
