Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department is intensifying efforts to ensure road safety as children return to school. The Traffic Unit will monitor school zones for speeding and distracted driving, supported by the activation of photo enforcement cameras. A national survey reveals that two-thirds of drivers exceed speed limits in school zones during peak times, underscoring the need for increased vigilance. In Washington, speed-related crashes led to 221 deaths in 2024, with Spokane reporting over 20 fatal incidents linked to speeding and distraction in the past five years. Parents are advised to encourage children to wear bright clothing and adhere to road safety rules while walking or biking.

Proper seating arrangements in vehicles are also emphasized for younger passengers. This initiative aims to foster a safer environment for children during the school year. By working together, the community can protect its most valuable asset—its children.
