Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department calls on drivers to prioritize safety as children return to school, urging them to slow down in school zones. The Traffic Unit will actively enforce speed limits and watch for distracted driving, with school zone photo enforcement cameras becoming operational on Tuesday. A national survey indicates that two-thirds of drivers exceed the posted speed limit in school zones during busy drop-off and pick-up times. In 2024, speed-related crashes claimed 221 lives in Washington, with Spokane reporting over 20 fatalities due to speeding and distraction over the last five years. Children, particularly vulnerable as pedestrians, face increased risks; survival rates drop significantly with higher vehicle speeds.

Parents should also remind walking and biking children to wear bright clothing and stay distraction-free. Bus riders are advised to remove backpacks before sitting to ensure proper seating. Collectively, these efforts aim to protect children and promote safer road practices during the school year.
