Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Police Department is launching a safety campaign as schools reopen, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits and minimize distractions. The Traffic Unit will enforce regulations in school zones, focusing on speed limits and bus stop compliance. In Washington, speed-related accidents claimed 221 lives in 2024, with distracted driving resulting in 16 fatalities. Children are particularly vulnerable; a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at 20 mph has a 90% survival chance, compared to a 50% survival rate at 30 mph. Parents should remind children about road safety and ensure they wear bright, reflective clothing.

Additionally, bus riders should remove backpacks while seated to ensure proper safety. This initiative aims to enhance road safety as part of a broader community effort. By working together, Spokane residents can protect their children during the school year.
