Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6, concluding a nearly four-decade career in the fire service. Assistant Chief Tom Williams will succeed her on October 7, as appointed by Mayor Lisa Brown. O’Berg, who joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020, became the first woman to lead the department and had previously served in various roles throughout her career. Williams brings 30 years of fire service experience from Oregon, including positions with Portland Fire and Rescue. O’Berg acknowledged the honor of serving and thanked her colleagues and the community for their support.

Mayor Brown highlighted O’Berg's significant impact during a time of transition for the department. Williams expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead and acknowledged O’Berg's contributions. This leadership change marks a pivotal moment for the Spokane Fire Department as it continues to serve the community.
