Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after a nearly 36-year career in the fire service. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams to succeed her, effective October 7, ensuring a seamless transition. O’Berg joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020 and was the first woman to lead the department, serving as Interim Fire Chief before her permanent appointment in April 2024. Williams brings over 30 years of experience in the fire service, including roles in Oregon's Portland Fire and Rescue. O’Berg thanked her colleagues and expressed pride in the community's dedication to public service.

Mayor Brown acknowledged O’Berg's significant contributions and expressed confidence in Williams' leadership. Williams highlighted his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the department and work alongside O’Berg.
