Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6, after nearly four decades in the fire service, with Assistant Chief Tom Williams succeeding her on October 7. O’Berg has had a distinguished career, including becoming the first female chief of the Spokane Fire Department in April 2024. She expressed gratitude for her service and emphasized the importance of public servants in the community. Williams, who has served as Assistant Chief since June 2020, has over 30 years of experience in various fire service roles, primarily in Oregon. His prior positions include Battalion Chief and Division Chief with Portland Fire and Rescue.

O’Berg acknowledged the trust and professionalism of her team during her tenure. Mayor Brown lauded O’Berg as a dedicated leader and expressed confidence in Williams' capabilities. Williams stated his honor in leading the department and gratitude for O’Berg's mentorship.
